Parks, Recreation & Community Services

With the consolidation of the Community Services and Parks Departments on July 1, 2010, the City of Whittier has streamlined the programs and facilities our residents enjoy, to make visiting a park, attending an evening concert or viewing an art exhibit even more pleasurable. The Community Services Division is under the direction of Virginia Santana, Director of Parks, Recreation and Community Services.

The Community Services Division consists of seven components, which provide programs for every taste and every age, frequently partnering with other community organizations to provide the best services possible with our combined resources.

Cultural Arts

Cultural Arts supports fine arts in our community. Whether it be a symphony performance or a more casual concert in a park, cheering for your favorite “Whittier Idol” contestant or the delight of seeing art close up in the City Hall or Parnell Park lobbies, Whittier believes the arts are an important part of everyday life.

Recreation

Recreation offers a myriad of classes. Sharpen your mind, strengthen your body, learn a news skill or develop a new hobby. Whatever your interest, we have something for you.

Senior Services

Senior Services gives those 55 years and older opportunities to meet new friends, take a trip, enjoy dinner and show, evening dances and special holiday events. With two Senior Centers in town, something good is always happening.

Social Services

Social Services helps our neighbors who may be in need, with grants to the excellent local non-profit social service agencies which serve our area, as well as providing referrals to services which can help our residents with their concerns and problems.

Transit / Accessibility

Transit/Accessibility works to ensure everyone can enjoy our parks, programs and services, whether by using Dial-A-Ride or providing bus information to get there, or by developing ways to make Whittier a barrier-free community.

Youth Services

Youth Services officers after school and summer programs for our young people, including recreation and sports, arts and crafts, homework assistance, volunteer opportunities, trips and family events to give them positive ways to spend their leisure time.
