"Parks Make Life Better" and the new Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department is committed to enriching the lives of our residents through Whittier’s lovely parks, recreation and social services programs and transportation services.

With the consolidation of the Community Services and Parks Departments on July 1, 2010, the City of Whittier was able to streamline the programs and facilities our residents enjoy, to make visiting a park, attending an evening concert or viewing an art exhibit even more pleasurable. The Park Division is under the direction of Virginia Santana, Director of Parks, Recreation and Community Services.

Park Division

The Park Division is responsible for the maintenance and improvement of Whittier’s 23 parks, greenspace areas, street medians and an impressive array of parkway trees, along with acquiring and developing open space for additional park purposes when opportunities occur. Whittier’s parks include four large community parks, 15 neighborhood parks, two wilderness parks and sports fields and a dog park, along with the Greenway Trail, the hiking/biking trail that stretches from the 605 Freeway to the corner of Lambert Road and Mills Avenue.

Maintenance of these parks goes hand-in-hand with the Community Services efforts to provide quality outdoor programming. Other Park Division responsibilities to keep Whittier green and beautiful include maintenance of the the City grounds; the Civic Center Complex Health Department grounds; landscaped public grounds; the Uptown Historic District, including parking lot landscaping and gallerias; and exterior maintenance of the historic Bailey House. Noting the importance of preserving the natural environment, the Park Division also assists in the Whittier Hills Preservation efforts through the Puente Hills Habitat Preservation Authority, NHPA Citizens Technical Advisory Committee, Mountains Recreation Conservation Authority and related Joint Powers Authorities and maintains the street ends connections to the Native Habitat Preservation Authority property.

To achieve the desired results of beauty and safety for the community, the Park Division operates a regular schedule of park facility maintenance; play equipment maintenance; parkway tree, installation and maintenance and contract maintenance; landscape maintenance; irrigation installation and maintenance; street median landscape maintenance; maintenance contracts administration; parkway tree maintenance; pool and fountain maintenance; “Welcome Sign” maintenance; installation of flags and holiday decorations; administer Greenwaste/Recycling programs in the parks; and administer volunteer labor, court referrals, county work programs and Scout projects. Working together, the new Parks, Recreation and Community Services Division will continue to provide the high quality of programs, services and facilities that our residents have come to expect and enjoy.
